Biography
Integrated Investigator at CHAM

Born on the 12th April 1950, Adelino Cardoso obtained a doctorate in Modern philosophy at the University of Lisbon (2003) and is currently Integrated Investigator at CHAM – Centre for the Humanities, FCSH, New University of Lisbon, where he leads the research team “Science and Culture”. His research interests cover Modern philosophy, phenomenology, Portuguese thought, history and philosophy of medicine.

Author of numerous papers in specialised journals, and several books, namely: Leibniz segundo a expressão (1992), Fulgurações do eu. Indivíduo e Singularidade no pensamento do Renascimento (2002), Vida e percepção de si. Figuras da Subjectividade no século XVII (2008), Labirinto do eu (2019). Principal Investigator of several interdisciplinary projects comprehending mainly the scientific areas of philosophy, medicine, literature and psychology: “Philosophy, Medicine and Society” (2007-2011), “The concept of nature in the medico-philosophical thought at the transition from the 17th to the 18th century” (2012-2015), “Medical art and scientific intelligibility in the Archipathologia (1614) by Filipe Montalto” (2013-2015), “Meanings of mental illness in Portugal from the Archipatologia by Filipe Montalto” (2018-2021), “The lucid sleep as an access pathway to the human psyche in the work by Abbot Faria” (2019-2021).
