Champalimaud Surgical Centre
At the forefront of minimally invasive surgery
The Champalimaud Foundation’s Surgical Centre offers a vast range of different surgical solutions to achieve the best clinical results. Under the leadership of digestive surgeon Professor Dr. Nuno Figueiredo it focuses its activity on the Champalimaud Clinical Centre’s areas of oncologic intervention: breast, digestive tract, liver, bile ducts, pancreas, urology (prostate and urinary tract, gynaecology, thoracic and lung surgery, percutaneous and endovascular interventional radiology, and neurosurgery). The unit’s facilities and technical resources are also available for a variety of procedures unrelated to oncologic disease.

Treatment
Top-level technology for better results
Concerning the support available for hospitalisation, the surgical centre is composed of four fully functional state-of-the-art operating rooms, an intensive care unit with 11 rooms, and 26 individual rooms.
Implementing the CCC’s philosophy of patient-centred care, each room was designed with comfort and well-being in mind. The rooms overlook the Tagus River and the Tropical Garden, which are already an integral part of the whole recovery process by promoting the patients’ much needed peace and tranquillity.
Postoperative hospitalisation is ensured through recovery or intensive care beds, depending on the clinical situation of the patients, who can move directly into the hospitalisation rooms as soon as their clinical condition allows it.
In order to shorten hospitalisation periods as much as possible, the CCC is developing an innovative home programme called “The Hospital of the Future”, developed in collaboration with Philips and Portugal Telecom. This programme aims to provide the conditions that enable patients’ hospitalisation to extend to their home, whenever individual conditions allow it, and as long as patients receive the clinical interventional solutions adapted to their needs.
The Champalimaud Surgical Centre is perfectly aligned with the Champalimaud Foundation’s concept of internal medicine. Our philosophy is based on short-term hospitalisations, and only when needed. People will continue to be treated in the least invasive manner possible.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
Ensuring a quicker recovery and fewer complications
Apart from conventional surgical equipment, each operating room is equipped with the most recent technologies and techniques in the field of robotics, laparoscopic and microscopic surgery. In particular, the CCC uses the Da Vinci Xi Surgical System, a state-of-the-art platform optimised for performing complex surgeries, with 3DHD vision and complete anatomical access, using high-precision movements that go well beyond the human hand’s capabilities.
With the acquisition of this system, the first such equipment to be available in Portugal, the CCC is able to perform the most technologically advanced surgical procedures. The excellence of the Surgical Centre’s facilities thus allows us to commit to the different areas of minimally invasive surgery - namely, oncoplastic surgery for breast cancer, single-port video-assisted thoracic surgery and laparoscopic or robotic surgery for pelvic and abdominal pathologies (prostate, urinary tract, ovarian, uterine, and colorectal cancers). Our surgeons have extensive experience in these innovative surgical modalities, which represent a huge gain for patients, due to both the shorter recovery periods and the enhanced quality of life.
The CCC also has a surgical unit for outpatients, with a hybrid room that combines all the capabilities of an operating room with high definition medical imaging equipment. In this unit, it is possible to perform surgical procedures, as well as interventional radiology, with 3D intraoperative (during the surgery) imaging. With this operating room, it is possible to perform so-called “multidisciplinary surgery”, in which various professionals - surgeons, radiologists, anaesthesiologists, nurses – perform surgeries coupled with “on-site” acquisition of high-acuity and high-definition images, in order to identify and correct, in real-time, problems that could arise with the patients.

Qualification and Advanced Training
Excellence based on learning and collaborative efforts
The strong commitment to the qualification and advanced training component for these Minimally Invasive Surgery methodologies is based on close collaborations established with Reference Centres and International Consultants: In the areas of colon and rectum, with Professors Bill Heald, from the Pelican Cancer Foundation, Basingstoke, United Kingdom, Geerard Beats, of the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Maastricht University, Netherlands, and Amjad Parvaiz, from Spyer Portsmouth Hospital, United Kingdom; for prostate and urinary tract surgeries, with Professor Renaud Bollens, of the Groupe Hospitalier de l’Institut Catholique de Lille, França, Dr. Christophe Assenmacker, of the Catholic University in Louvain, Belgium, and Dr. Aldo Bocciardi, of the Niguarda Hospital, in Milan, Italy.
Additionally, following the work developed in this area and thus reinforcing our assumed commitment to being at the forefront in terms of innovation and development in surgery, the CCC hosts the EARCS - European Academy of Robotic Colorectal Surgery – an international collaborative programme whose goal is to provide advanced training to European colorectal surgeons in the field of robotics.
Champalimaud Surgical Centre
Techniques and Intervention Unit
At the forefront of technology and technique
The Champalimaud Surgical Centre also has a Techniques and Intervention Unit (TIU), where all the conventional and interventional techniques in gastroenterology, bronchology, and urology are used. It has the capacity to apply sedation – from heavy sedation to general anaesthetics – and is supported by a fully equipped recovery unit. Having at its disposal the most modern and innovative technologies, the Techniques Unit has the means to offer all the techniques available in the area of diagnostic and interventional endoscopy. These techniques are not only used for diagnosing pathologies, but also as a modality for high-complexity endoscopic therapeutics, and can in some cases replace conventional surgery, with obvious benefits in terms of survival and recovery periods. Moreover, they are compatible with the outpatient regime. In the area of digestive endoscopy, they enable, for instance, the resection of pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions, the treatment of digestive tract and bile duct occlusions, the resolution of surgical complications, and the ablation of pancreatic tumours.

The Team
Meet our team
Working at the vanguard of surgical approaches, the Champalimaud Clinical Centre created a Service that utilises most advanced technical, technological, protocolary and environmental conditions. But its greatest strength is found in its team of dedicated professionals who work in an atmosphere of evolution, to provide the latest innovations in oncologic treatment. And given that in medicine nothing can be done in isolation, the regular collaborations established with world renowned specialists are essential to making progress in the way disease is treated, always with the best interests and benefits for the patients in mind.
